The chief of a band of Spanish brigands - known as the Ladrones - has recently been killed. A vote is held to determine the new chief, but the result is a draw. The law of the Ladrones states that in such instances, the first stranger the brigands come across must assume the role of chieftain. Enter Mr Grigg, an English tourist who has got lost in the Spanish hills and who is forced to don the ceremonial hat and marry the fearsome Inez de Roxas, widow the recently-deceased chieftain. Throw in a captured English maiden, duplicitous brigands and a count disguised as an old shepherd and you have a typical comic opera plot - worthy even of W S Gilbert, Sullivan's future partner. |
